Compare physical metal metal accounts and fund exposure
C1T8L1 · Revised 2026-10-26
Decision and objectives
Practical task: Compare three domestic gold-exposure routes for a cash and delivery objective
Objectives: Distinguish possession bank-account claims and fund units; Normalize metal quantity and purity; Compare storage spread and wrapper costs.
Required prior knowledge: C1T7L5. Classification: domestic. Revision: 2026-10-26. All fictional names, prices, rates, fees, calendars and tax schedules below are hypothetical unless explicitly identified as a dated document observation.
Similar gold exposure can mean possession of a bar, a bank's account obligation or units in a fund. Those rights matter when the objective is eventual physical delivery, a TRY cash payment or portfolio diversification. Compare quantity and purity before comparing prices, then trace custody, exit and costs. A number labeled “grams” does not by itself identify an immediately deliverable bar.
Mechanics
Physical possession entails authenticity, purity, secure storage, insurance if chosen and the dealer's resale terms. A metal account is a claim under its bank agreement; whether metal is individually allocated, deliverable, subject to minimums or convertible only through a separate service must be read directly. A fund unit is a portfolio claim whose mandate may include metal and other permitted positions; it is not automatically redeemable for a bar.
Allocated metal identifies specific metal for an owner under the arrangement; an unallocated account commonly represents a quantity claim rather than title to a particular bar. Do not assign either structure to an actual Turkish account without reading its contract. Deposit insurance treatment, where applicable, requires separate current scope checks and is not a universal physical-delivery guarantee.
Price and return drivers
Fine-metal content = gross weight × purity fraction. Normalize to the same metal and quote convention. A 100-gram bar at 0.995 purity contains 99.5 fine grams; a quote per gross gram at that purity differs from a quote per fine gram. Return comes from metal price and currency changes, less costs; metal itself does not pay a coupon. A fund can add other holdings and expenses, so even matched gold prices may not explain all unit performance.
Worked case
Hypothetical comparable exposure to 10 gross grams at the same declared purity. Physical purchase cost is TRY 30,000, resale after the period TRY 32,000 and storage/insurance TRY 150: final net TRY 31,850, gain TRY 1,850. Metal account purchase cash is TRY 29,800, sale proceeds TRY 31,700 and account/delivery-independent charges TRY 50: net TRY 31,650, gain TRY 1,850. A fictional fund purchase is TRY 30,000; after-expense redemption value TRY 31,950 and investor charge TRY 20: net TRY 31,930, gain TRY 1,930. Investor taxes are excluded here because their actual treatment differs and must be verified.
Return percentages are 6.1667%, 6.2081% and 6.4333%, respectively, using each actual initial outlay. The exposures and supplied costs are hypothetical; the account's lower initial price is not an assumption about a real bank's market spread.
Adverse case
The investor needs physical metal next day. The physical bar is available, subject to secure handling. The hypothetical bank account's delivery service requires five business days and an extra TRY 300; the ordinary fund offers cash redemption only. These routes fail the delivery deadline even if they track price well. For a cash stress, physical resale falls to TRY 27,000 while storage remains TRY 150: net TRY 26,850 and loss TRY 3,150 versus purchase. Possession removes some service-provider exposure but does not prevent price loss, theft or authenticity problems.
Practical use
Use a reputable authorized route appropriate to the product and verify actual contracts. For metal accounts, read ownership, delivery, denomination, charges and current insurance scope with the bank/TMSF framework. For funds, obtain KAP policy and redemption terms, checking what expenses already enter unit value. For physical purchases, retain invoice, weight/purity evidence and resale terms. Actual taxes and transaction levies require income year, investor residence/status, instrument, acquisition/sale dates and effective legislation. No tax equivalence among routes is assumed.
Decision boundaries
Choose the legal claim that matches the actual goal. Physical possession may fit a delivery need but add storage and resale costs; an account may fit convenience with contract-specific provider exposure; a fund may fit portfolio exposure with fund risk and redemption timing. Decline a price-only comparison that ignores purity or delivery rights. If the need is fixed TRY cash soon, all unhedged gold routes can fail because metal price can fall.
Practice and references
Exercise: hypothetical 20-gram item has purity 0.999 and costs TRY 64,000. Resale proceeds are TRY 66,000 and storage cost TRY 200; exclude tax for this isolated ledger. Answer: fine content 19.98 grams; net cash TRY 65,800; profit TRY 1,800; return 2.8125%. A 20-gram item at 0.995 contains 19.90 fine grams, so the same gross-gram price is not an equal-purity comparison.
Takeaway: compare the legal claim, fine quantity and exit route before the quoted metal return.
