Decision and objectives

Practical task: Compare a hypothetical gold-certificate quote with represented metal value

Objectives: Read the metal representation and conversion right of ALTIN.S1; Calculate a purity-matched price premium; Evaluate conversion frictions and premium compression.

Required prior knowledge: C1T8L1. Classification: domestic. Revision: 2026-10-26. All fictional names, prices, rates, fees, calendars and tax schedules below are hypothetical unless explicitly identified as a dated document observation.

Darphane gold certificates connect a listed security with a specified quantity of gold and a conditional physical-conversion route. The market price can diverge from the represented metal value. The analyst must read both the quantity/purity and the operational conversion terms; assuming instant, costless conversion can turn a measured premium into a fictitious arbitrage.

Mechanics

Borsa Istanbul's product description, checked 2026-10-26, describes ALTIN.S1 as representing 0.01 gram of gold at 0.995 purity per certificate and refers conversion rights to the KAP prospectus. The investor initially owns a recorded security, not a bar already in hand. The KAP notice dated 2023-03-17 illustrates that conversion requires intermediary instructions, settled holdings and size/process conditions. Its historic hours and limits are not taught here as current terms.

Before a real conversion, obtain the effective instrument note, amendments and current intermediary procedure: eligible balance, minimum/increment/maximum, instruction deadline, fees, cancellation, delivery method, location and delay. Exchange sale and physical conversion are different exits. Settlement and physical delivery can involve different calendars.

Price and return drivers

Represented gross grams = certificates × grams per certificate; fine grams also multiply by purity. A purity-matched reference value per certificate uses the gold quote for the same 0.995 gram basis. If using a fine-gold quote instead, multiply by 0.995 before comparing. Premium = certificate price / represented reference value −1. The reference is an analytical comparison, not necessarily an executable conversion price after delivery costs.

Worked case

Hypothetical market quotes, with only the representation taken from the dated Borsa description: 0.995-purity gold reference TRY 4,000 per gross gram; certificate ask TRY 44. Each certificate's represented reference value is 0.01 ×4,000 = TRY 40. Premium is 44/40−1 =10%. Buying 10,000 certificates costs TRY 440,000 before commission and represents 100 gross grams, or 99.5 fine grams. The represented metal reference is TRY 400,000, so the market premium paid is TRY 40,000.

Suppose, only for an invented friction illustration, total conversion/delivery charges are TRY 2,000 and all current eligibility conditions have been verified. The investor still paid TRY 442,000 for represented reference metal worth TRY 400,000 at the same instant. Physical-delivery intent may explain a preference, but it does not make the premium disappear.

Adverse case

Gold's purity-matched reference rises 5% to TRY 4,200 per gram, but the certificate premium falls to zero and its market bid becomes TRY 42. Selling 10,000 units produces TRY 420,000 before exit commission. Against TRY 440,000 purchase cash, price loss is TRY 20,000 or 4.5455%, despite the gold rise. A widening bid–ask spread could make it worse. A conversion right can constrain prices economically while costs, size, time and operational restrictions allow persistent differences.

Practical use

Use an authorized domestic equity-market intermediary for the listed security and verify live listing, fees and current settlement before an order. For physical conversion, the actual custodian/intermediary must confirm settled holdings and current process; do not use the 2023 notice as a current instruction sheet. Include market spread, commission, custody, conversion, delivery/storage and taxes where applicable. Actual tax analysis needs income year, investor status, acquisition date, transaction type and effective legal source. This example excludes investor tax and labels all quotes/costs hypothetical.

Decision boundaries

The certificate may fit exchange-traded gold exposure or a verified delivery plan, depending on premium and frictions. It fails a plan based on guaranteed equality to metal price or delivery by an unverified date. Decline when a premium exceeds the investor's justified cost budget or conversion rights cannot be implemented for the holding size. Do not compare a certificate representing 0.995 gold directly with a fine-gram quote without purity normalization.

Practice and references

Exercise: hypothetical same-purity gold reference TRY 3,500 per gram and certificate ask TRY 36.75, with the stated 0.01-gram representation. Answer: represented value TRY 35; premium 5%. A 2,000-certificate purchase costs TRY 73,500 and represents 20 gross grams, or 19.9 fine grams. If gold rises 2% and premium becomes zero, theoretical matched value is TRY 35.70 per certificate and gross sale TRY 71,400; price loss TRY 2,100 or 2.8571%, before charges/tax. No physical-conversion eligibility for 2,000 units is implied.

Takeaway: a gold rise can coincide with a certificate loss when the premium contracts.
