Evaluate long dated options zero day expiry options and execution gaps
Identifier: C6T4L4 | Revision: 2026-10-26 | Planned study: 10–15 minutes, excluding extended practice.
Decision and objectives
Decision: Different expiries buy different rights; near-expiry execution and funding must be judged on the actual contract calendar. Objectives: Compare horizon-specific premium and cash risk; Separate low premium from low exposure; Stress a quote gap near expiry. Prerequisite: C6T4L3.
All numerical offers, rates, prices, account chains, fees and contract parameters below are hypothetical, unless a primary document is expressly identified. They are not current executable offers or evidence that a Turkey-resident investor can access them. The assumed investor is a Turkey-resident individual outside a business, with no assumed US citizenship or tax residence; actual classification must be checked. Results are before actual tax unless a fictional tax schedule is explicitly supplied. No account, deposit or trade is required.
Mechanics
A long-dated option buys time for a view or protection need but commits more premium and can carry substantial volatility and rate exposure. A zero-day-expiry option, or0DTE, resolves on its trading date under a precise product calendar; it has little time for a wrong view to recover. A small premium can create a high percentage loss, while a short same-day option retains tail obligations until settlement is resolved. Exchange sessions, time zones and holidays define “today”; a local midnight is not an option specification.
Price and return drivers
Compare the same underlying, deliverable and view across expiries while stating the different rights being purchased. Do not annualize one intraday gain into a repeatable investment return. Near expiry, gamma can change rapidly and spreads or execution latency can dominate a small premium. A long option’s paid-premium bound applies to the plain unfinanced right; exercise into shares or futures creates additional holdings and cash demands. Stop orders can fail through gaps and are not contractual protection for an uncovered writer.
Worked case
Synthetic same-underlying European cash calls, K 100, multiplier 100. Long-dated 90-day call ask 6;0DTE call ask 0.80; both incur total costs 10. At same-day fixing 105, the0DTE call pays 500 and nets 410, a 500/80 gross-payoff-to-premium ratio that is not a forecast. The 90-day call has not expired: use supplied sale bid 7 at that time, so net 90. Using its expiry formula today would incorrectly report−110. The rights have different horizons, and the 90-day call can retain time value if not sold. Both examples are separately synthetic, not a listed series or guaranteed fill.
Adverse case
At0DTE final fixings 99, 100, 105, net is−90, −90, +410; full premium loss needs only a modest unfavorable price, not underlying failure. A pre-expiry bid falling from 0.80 to 0.20 produces 20−80−10=−70 if closed. A short0DTE call sold 0.80 and later fixing 120 loses 2000−80+10=1930, far beyond received premium. A halt or a market order crossing a widened spread can prevent the intended exit. The long-dated call’s remaining value also can fall after volatility reprices, even if the underlying does not move. For the still-unexpired long-dated call, supplied same-day bids at underlying 99, 100 and 105 are 5.50, 6 and 7. Net sale results after the 6 entry premium and 10 costs are −60, −10 and +90, respectively; these are pre-expiry quote scenarios, not intrinsic payoffs.
Practical use
Verify the exact expiry and fixing method, option trading cutoff, exercise instructions, settlement and product permissions. Read the actual bid/ask depth at intended size; delayed chains are educational inputs, not executable quotes. Do not assume every daily expiry has the same settlement convention as another contract on the same index.
Before implementation verify the legal entity, jurisdiction, authorized access, actual instrument identifier and full documents. Include bid/ask, commissions, transfer/FX, custody, funding and exit costs; avoid deducting already embedded fund expenses twice. Recheck residency, income year, acquisition dates, withholding, treaty and domestic declaration treatment. Foreign tax concessions or investor protections do not follow automatically from the instrument name or trading currency.
Decision boundaries
Choose long-dated insurance when the need persists and the premium budget supports it. Choose any same-day exposure only if its actual cash-loss and timing risks fit an explicit short horizon. Decline a0DTE writer position proposed as a low-risk substitute for cash interest. Retain the baseline when monitoring, settlement knowledge or available depth is inadequate. A lower premium alone is not evidence of a cheaper equivalent right.
Practice and references
Exercise: 0DTE long putK 200, premium 1.20, multiplier 50, total charges 6. Solution: At fixing 195, payoff 250, net 184. At fixing 200 or 205, payoff 0, loss 66. A purchase ask 1.20 and immediate bid 0.90 would realize 45−60−6=−21 before any underlying move. No annualized return claim follows from these intraday amounts.
Takeaway: Different expiries buy different rights; near-expiry execution and funding must be judged on the actual contract calendar. References: product card, formula; glossary: 0DTE; Long dated option; Execution gap. Next: C6T5L1. Topic test.
