Compare global CFD protections jurisdiction and broker counterparty models
Identifier: C6T5L1 | Revision: 2026-10-26 | Planned study: 10–15 minutes, excluding extended practice.
Decision and objectives
Decision: CFD rights depend on the actual entity, client category and contract; a brand does not transfer another affiliate’s protection. Objectives: Compare entity-specific CFD protections; Calculate price, funding and execution costs; Reject an unsupported affiliate protection claim. Prerequisite: C6T4L4.
All numerical offers, rates, prices, account chains, fees and contract parameters below are hypothetical, unless a primary document is expressly identified. They are not current executable offers or evidence that a Turkey-resident investor can access them. The assumed investor is a Turkey-resident individual outside a business, with no assumed US citizenship or tax residence; actual classification must be checked. Results are before actual tax unless a fictional tax schedule is explicitly supplied. No account, deposit or trade is required.
Mechanics
A contract for difference (CFD) pays a reference price difference without giving ownership of the underlying. Identify the actual provider, jurisdiction and client category. One group can contract through several affiliates with different rules. A dealer remains the customer’s contractual counterparty even when it hedges externally; an agency-style description requires its own agreement. The FCA source concerns UK firms and categories. It does not establish Turkish authorization or rights against an offshore affiliate.
Price and return drivers
Net CFD result includes price difference, spread, commissions, funding, distributions and currency conversion. Margin is collateral, not a loss cap. Negative-balance protection, when applicable, has an entity, client category, account boundary and conditions. Margin closeout cannot guarantee execution at a stop through a gap. Compare the loss permitted by each actual agreement before comparing maximum leverage or an advertised funding rate.
Worked case
Synthetic long exposure is USD 10000 for five days. A 2% price rise gives USD 200 gross. Supplied commission is 25, separate round-trip spread cost 20, and simple funding is 10000 × 8% × 5/360 = 11.1111. Net gain is USD 143.8889. A 2% fall instead gives −256.1111. Collateral is 1000, so nominal exposure is ten times collateral. All values are teaching assumptions, not provider quotations. The spread is separate because the stipulated reference-price move excludes it.
Adverse case
A 15% gap creates price loss 1500 plus costs 56.1111, total loss 1556.1111. Synthetic account A expressly caps all CFD account losses, including costs, at its entire 1000 balance; no other funds are held there. Its declared cap leaves no further obligation. Account B has no such clause and owes another 556.1111. These +2%, −2% and −15% states show why the contracts differ. If A holds 2000 across its protected account, a position-level 1000 cap cannot be assumed. Interim quotes and disruption clauses can alter realized exits.
Practical use
Read the entity, registration scope, client classification, client-money terms, funding schedule, closeout process and loss-protection clause. Verify lawful domestic access separately. A move to professional status or another affiliate requires a fresh comparison of rights. Obtain the complete cash ledger for the planned holding period rather than assuming the promotional spread is the total cost. Include the quoted spread, commission, funding, custody, conversion and exit charges applicable to the actual route. Check investor residence/status, acquisition and income dates, effective tax rules and treaty scope before applying any actual tax; these cases remain before actual tax.
Decision boundaries
Decline an offshore account presented as covered by UK retail rules when its agreement supplies no such scope. Choose only a contract whose full cash obligations fit the budget. A listed future changes clearing and funding; spot or a fully paid option changes ownership or payoff. Neither alternative is automatically superior. Compare the needed exposure and actual available route, not the largest advertised leverage.
Practice and references
Exercise: USD 6000 exposure gains 1.5% in three days; commission 12, spread 9, simple funding 10% actual/360. Solution: gross gain 90, funding 5, net 64. A 10% gap gives total loss 626. With collateral 300 and no supplied protection, a further 326 can be owed. A familiar retail label cannot create an omitted cap.
Takeaway: CFD rights depend on the actual entity, client category and contract; a brand does not transfer another affiliate’s protection. References: product card, formula; glossary: CFD jurisdiction; Client category; Negative balance scope. Next: C6T5L2. Topic test.
