Compare currency return liquidity denomination and domestic fund access
Identifier: C2T5L6 | Revision: 2026-10-26
Decision and objectives
A saver wants USD exposure but has too little cash for the quoted minimum direct bond denomination. A domestic Eurobond fund may provide a different access route, but it changes the legal claim, cash schedule and costs. Compare total wealth on the same horizon and currency rather than compare a bond coupon with a fund's past return.
Objectives: Compare direct and fund net wealth; Distinguish issue maturity from fund liquidity; Evaluate denomination and currency constraints.
Prerequisites: C2T5L5.
Mechanics
Direct ownership ties the holder to one issue's payment rights and denomination. A fund investor holds units in a portfolio managed under fund documents; coupons normally enter fund assets and unit value unless the fund distributes them. An ordinary fund's redemption price is based on its applicable valuation/dealing rule, not a guaranteed return of face on the investor's chosen date. Some fund routes are restricted; verify the actual fund category and investor eligibility.
Price and return drivers
Direct total wealth = dirty sale proceeds plus coupon cash and reinvestment, less investor costs. Fund total wealth = units × redemption unit price plus distributions, less investor charges. Expenses already reflected in the published unit price must not be deducted again. A TRY-quoted fund can still carry USD underlying exposure; the quotation currency does not remove FX risk. A hedged share class or strategy requires its own documentation.
Worked case
Hypothetical one-year comparison, no tax or financing, USD measurement. Initial budget USD 10,000. Direct route: all-in purchase debit USD 10,000, coupon USD 600, final dirty sale USD 9,700, exit fee USD 30. Wealth = 600 + 9,700 − 30 = USD 10,270; net return 2.70%. Fund route: USD-equivalent all-in unit purchase USD 10,000; ending unit value including embedded fund expenses USD 10,330; redemption charge USD 20; wealth USD 10,310, return 3.10%. Do not subtract the embedded management expense a second time.
Separate access constraint: direct issue minimum face USD 20,000, clean=dirty price 98, entry fee USD 50. Minimum debit = 20,000×0.98 + 50 = USD 19,650. An USD 10,000 budget cannot implement that direct quote; fractional custody must not be presumed. The fund's fictional lower subscription minimum can fit, subject to its own documented rules.
Adverse case
At a cash deadline, direct bid may fall to USD 9,000, making wealth 600+9,000−30 = USD 9,570, a −4.30% return. The fund's market exposures can also fall and its redemption proceeds may arrive later than the request date. If the supplied fund schedule pays three business days after pricing but the investor needs cash tomorrow, the route fails the deadline despite fitting the initial budget. Neither diversification nor unit divisibility guarantees immediate liquidity.
Practical use
Obtain direct executable size, spread, settlement and custody costs. For the fund obtain prospectus, investor information form, currency/hedging policy, expenses, order cutoff, valuation and redemption payment terms. Verify whether the fund is open to the investor; no numerical qualified-investor threshold is assumed. Include FX conversion and tax at the investor level on both routes; different wrappers can have different tax obligations. These examples supply zero tax solely to isolate the comparison.
Decision boundaries
Choose the route that satisfies currency, size, issuer concentration, dealing and cash-date constraints after costs. A fund can diversify but can also hold overlapping issuers or extend duration. Direct ownership can match a contractual maturity but may be concentrated and costly to sell early. Decline both if neither supplies dependable cash by the deadline; cash already in the spending currency is a valid baseline.
Practice and references
Exercise: hypothetical fund purchase USD-equivalent 5,000, ending published value 5,180 including embedded expenses, investor redemption charge 15. Answer: wealth USD 5,165; net gain USD 165; return 3.3%. A separate embedded expense of 40 already reflected in 5,180 is not deducted again. No tax or conversion charge is supplied.
Takeaway: compare implementable net cash and payment dates, not a direct coupon with a fund headline return.
