Decision and objectives

Calculate borrow fees on the specified valuation base. The decision record must connect the exposure, cash dates and implementable contract, rather than stop at a favorable price forecast.

By the end, you can calculate borrow fees on the specified valuation base; reconcile lender distribution adjustments and net short return; stress a variable fee and avoid a misleading return denominator.

Prerequisite: C3T8L2; completed Classes 1 and 2 and the Stock Market School foundation or Forex School foundation. All cases below are hypothetical; their prices, costs, rates, dates, contractual assumptions and collateral amounts are teaching inputs, not current offers.

Mechanics

Borrowing a share has its own price. The agreement states whether fees accrue on initial value, daily market value or another base, the annualization basis, minimum term and repricing rights. A distribution paid by the issuer can require an equivalent contractual payment from borrower to lender; a lower ex-distribution share price is not free short profit. Tax treatment of an adjustment is not assumed identical to an issuer dividend.

Price and return drivers

With a changing fee base, sum each interval's value × annual fee × days/basis. Compute price profit separately, then subtract the distribution adjustment. A return on own cash collateral is sensitive to how much cash is restricted; do not divide by sale proceeds and call it the only possible return definition.

Worked case

Hypothetical short 2,000 shares at TRY 50, buy back TRY 46 after 30 days. Fee uses daily market value, approximated by two stated 15-day blocks: TRY 100,000 at 6%, then TRY 96,000 at 10%, actual/360. Fees = TRY 250 + TRY 400 = TRY 650. Gross price profit TRY 8,000, distribution adjustment TRY 1 per share = TRY 2,000, trading charges TRY 400, funding TRY 300. Net = 8,000 − 650 − 2,000 − 400 − 300 = TRY 4,650 before tax. With own cash collateral TRY 40,000, the stated collateral-based return is 11.625%; it is not an unlevered security return.

Adverse case

If the second-block borrow rate rises to 30%, that block costs TRY 1,200 and total fee TRY 1,450. Net falls to TRY 3,850 even with the same favorable price change. If the TRY 1 distribution is accompanied only by an equal price fall from 50 to 49, gross TRY 2,000 is exactly consumed by the TRY 2,000 adjustment before any fees. A price chart without distributions overstates the short's economic advantage.

Practical use

Request the exact borrow-rate schedule and its effective times, valuation base, distribution treatment, collateral-interest credit and minimum charges. An indicative annual fee can reprice on scarce stock. Verify borrow availability and restrictions for the intended dates through the member; the organized lending framework does not promise a particular fee or inventory. Add repurchase spread, custody or lending administration charges and investor-specific taxes.

Reconcile the confirmation, position register and cash statement separately. Costs include the quoted bid/ask spread, brokerage and clearing charges, collateral or principal financing, currency conversion, custody where relevant, and exit or termination charges. A mark is not a fill. Any amount explicitly excluded below remains outside the reported result. Tax is excluded from these teaching cases: an actual comparison requires income year, investor residence and individual/corporate status, contract and acquisition dates, settlement form and effective law. The GIB guide, checked 2026-10-26, covers 2025 individual investment income, so its publication date alone does not settle a 2026 derivative liability.

Decision boundaries

A favorable share forecast can fail after borrow cost and distribution obligations. Decline when the fee can reset without an affordable exit, or when the distribution adjustment cannot be explained. Use a total-return record rather than a price-only backtest to evaluate a short strategy.

Practice and references

Exercise: hypothetical loan base TRY 60,000 for ten days at 12%, then TRY 54,000 for twenty days at 18%, actual/360. Solution: fees TRY 200 + TRY 540 = TRY 740. If gross price gain TRY 6,000, distribution adjustment TRY 1,500 and other costs TRY 600, net is TRY 3,160 before tax.

Takeaway: Stress a variable fee and avoid a misleading return denominator using the actual cash schedule, with every excluded cost and remaining exposure stated.
