Handle expiration calendars corporate actions and contract adjustments

Decision and objectives
Reconcile a contract adjustment with the underlying corporate action. The decision record must connect the exposure, cash dates and implementable contract, rather than stop at a favorable price forecast.
By the end, you can reconcile a contract adjustment with the underlying corporate action; check business-day expiry and broker operational deadlines; identify an unintended exposure created by stale position quantities.
Prerequisite: C3T1L4; completed Classes 1 and 2 and the Stock Market School foundation or Forex School foundation. All cases below are hypothetical; their prices, costs, rates, dates, contractual assumptions and collateral amounts are teaching inputs, not current offers.
Mechanics
A corporate action changes the cash security and can require a futures adjustment. An exchange adjustment may alter price, multiplier or another term so that the prior economic exposure is carried into a nonstandard series. Never calculate the new hedge by changing only the screen price. Preserve the notice and map old positions to new obligations.
An expiry calendar supplies dates, but your intermediary can set an earlier operational cutoff for delivery preparation or closure. A holiday can change the last trading day. The retrieved general rules address the last business day and half-day holidays; a dated calendar and series notice govern an implementation.
Price and return drivers
Exposure before an adjustment is old quantity × old multiplier × old price. Compare this with new quantity × new multiplier × new reference price, plus any explicit cash compensation. Equality of these reference values is a useful audit, not proof that the hedge remains suitable after the issuer event. Dividends, rights subscriptions and changes in portfolio ownership need separate records.
Worked case
A hypothetical split maps one future from 100 shares at TRY 200 to 200 shares at TRY 100. Reference notional is TRY 20,000 before and after. An investor owning 1,000 pre-split shares becomes owner of 2,000 post-split shares; ten adjusted short futures cover 10 × 200 = 2,000 shares. The standard new-series multiplier remains 100 in this fictional example, so twenty standard contracts would be needed instead. No trade or commission arises from the assumed administrative adjustment itself; any rebalancing trade has separate spread and fees.
Adverse case
If the investor buys ten standard contracts to close ten adjusted shorts, it creates a new long exposure of only 1,000 shares and leaves 1,000 shares net short across different series. A TRY 15 rise costs 1,000 × 15 = TRY 15,000 on that residual. A supposed final-day exit can also fail if a holiday moves expiry earlier or trading is halted; delivery and margin obligations then remain.
Practical use
Check KAP issuer events, exchange adjustment notices, the expiry calendar and the broker statement together. Verify the adjusted code, multiplier, cash compensation and deliverable balance rather than guessing from a price chart. Budget rebalancing commission, bid/ask cost, financing for rights subscriptions if relevant, and settlement fees; taxes are not assumed neutral merely because an adjustment preserves reference notional.
Reconcile the confirmation, position register and cash statement separately. Costs include the quoted bid/ask spread, brokerage and clearing charges, collateral or principal financing, currency conversion, custody where relevant, and exit or termination charges. A mark is not a fill. Any amount explicitly excluded below remains outside the reported result. Tax is excluded from these teaching cases: an actual comparison requires income year, investor residence and individual/corporate status, contract and acquisition dates, settlement form and effective law. The GIB guide, checked 2026-10-26, covers 2025 individual investment income, so its publication date alone does not settle a 2026 derivative liability.
Decision boundaries
Continue only after the number of underlying units and settlement terms reconcile. Adjusted and standard series are not interchangeable simply because they refer to the same issuer. If the action notice is missing, a paper hedge can document the uncertainty and postpone implementation; precise arithmetic on a guessed multiplier gives false assurance.
Practice and references
Exercise: a hypothetical adjustment changes 100 shares at TRY 150 into 150 shares at TRY 100. Four old contracts mapped one-for-one to four adjusted contracts represent TRY 60,000 both ways and 600 post-action shares. Solution: 4 × 100 × 150 = 4 × 150 × 100 = TRY 60,000. Six new standard 100-share contracts would cover 600 shares; four would leave 200 shares unhedged.
Takeaway: Identify an unintended exposure created by stale position quantities using the actual cash schedule, with every excluded cost and remaining exposure stated.
