Examine dual currency and yield enhancement term sheets and access limits
Identifier: C4T8L5 | Revision: 2026-10-26 | Planned study: 10–15 minutes, excluding extended practice.
Decision and objectives
Choose whether the method addresses this lesson’s task before placing an order. Objectives: 1. Reconstruct a conditional currency repayment. 2. Identify the short option embedded in yield enhancement. 3. Reject a structure that cannot meet its currency liability.
Prerequisite: C4T8L4.
All prices, ratios, term sheets, credit recoveries and cash dates below are hypothetical teaching assumptions, not current offers. Amounts are TRY unless explicitly marked otherwise. The investor is a hypothetical Turkey-resident individual acting outside a business; all results are before actual tax, which requires issue, acquisition, income-year and legal-status checks. No current eligibility or live listing is asserted.
Mechanics
A dual-currency or yield-enhancement label can hide a sale of an option to the provider. The investor receives a higher conditional coupon in exchange for accepting an adverse conversion or delivery formula. Read investment currency, repayment currency choice, strike convention, conversion trigger, coupon currency, observation time, early termination and issuer recourse. A deposit-like sales presentation does not establish deposit status, protection or authorization. Treat negotiated access as restricted and verify the exact legal form and investor permission; no current domestic offering or numeric eligibility threshold is asserted.
Price and return drivers
For the synthetic contract below, X isTRY perUSD. If X is at or above strike, provider paysTRY principal plus coupon. If X is below strike, provider may repay USD equal to the fixedTRY amount divided by strike; the investor then values thatUSD at the actual lowerX. This is adverse to an investor who needsTRY. The investor has effectively soldUSD downside/TRY appreciation protection to the provider under this convention. Other dual-currency structures reverse currencies or triggers; their formulas must be rebuilt rather than inferred from the name.
Worked case
Synthetic90-day unsecured term sheet: payTRY100000; stated3% period coupon, full promised amount103000; issuer fictional Meridian Bank may payTRY103000 when finalX≥32 TRY/USD, but paysUSD103000/32 =3218.75 when X<32. No compounding, no early-call right, maturity cash two business days later; external total costs500. AtX36 andX32, full performance paysTRY103000, net2500. AtX28, receivedUSD3218.75 is worthTRY90125; net90125−100000−500=−10375. The favorable-sounding coupon does not protect the spending currency.
Adverse case
AtX20, convertedUSD value64375 and net−36125. The3-state comparisonX28,32,36 therefore produces−10375,+2500,+2500, while the separateX20 stress shows deeper currency loss. Before maturity a supplied early-exit bidTRY94000 and exit costs already included in the total500 yield−6500; a provider is not assumed to quote such an exit in reality. A hypothetical issuer default adds credit loss regardless of the currency formula. A TRY liability of100000 at maturity is not met in theX28 case, despite all promisedUSD being delivered.
Practical use
Verify provider authorization and the exact wrapper before discussing access or protection. Do not reuse obsolete numeric professional/qualified thresholds; the lesson makes no current eligibility claim.
For any actual domestic implementation, verify the exact issue/contract, authorized intermediary, account permission and executable size. Include spread, commissions, passed-through fees, funding/borrow, custody and exercise/exit costs without double-counting embedded charges. Recheck income year, residency/status, issue/acquisition dates and effective tax law; all case results remain before actual tax.
Decision boundaries
Use the term sheet only when both potential repayment currencies and stressed amounts fit the investor’s need and access is verified. Decline this structure for a nonnegotiableTRY100000 liability: the adverse permitted conversion creates a10375 economic loss including costs. Ask for legal form, authorization, suitability/eligibility evidence, custody or account record, tax treatment and early-exit method before comparing its coupon with a deposit or bond. Do not infer tax or state protection from the word yield. A simpler same-currency cash instrument is a meaningful baseline.
Practice and references
Exercise:TRY60000 principal plus2% period coupon=61200; conversion strike30 TRY/USD; below strike provider repaysUSD2040. Solution: With finalX27, value55080; total fees300 give net−5220. AtX33 theTRY repayment61200 gives net900. The investor earns a positive nominal coupon under one state and still accepts an adverse conditional principal conversion under another.
Takeaway: A higher dual-currency coupon can conceal a spending-currency principal shortfall; evaluate both repayment states. Reference links: product card, formula; glossary: Dual currency product; Yield enhancement; Repayment currency. Next: C5T1L1. Topic test.
