Analyze turbo barrier and knock out certificate conditions
Identifier: C4T8L2 | Revision: 2026-10-26 | Planned study: 10–15 minutes, excluding extended practice.
Decision and objectives
Choose whether the method addresses this lesson’s task before placing an order. Objectives: 1. Apply a path-dependent knockout condition. 2. Calculate a surviving turbo’s ratio-adjusted payoff. 3. Stress gaps and financing-level changes.
Prerequisite: C4T8L1.
All prices, ratios, term sheets, credit recoveries and cash dates below are hypothetical teaching assumptions, not current offers. Amounts are TRY unless explicitly marked otherwise. The investor is a hypothetical Turkey-resident individual acting outside a business; all results are before actual tax, which requires issue, acquisition, income-year and legal-status checks. No current eligibility or live listing is asserted.
Mechanics
A turbo certificate links repayment to a reference asset and a financing level, with a barrier that can terminate the claim before maturity. Knockout is a contractual event, not a stop order placed by the investor. Read barrier direction, touch versus breach, observation source and hours, financing-level adjustment, residual-value rule, issuer discretion and disruption terms. The SPK framework distinguishes barrier and knockout conditions; it does not supply the terms of the fictional certificate below or confirm that it is listed.
Price and return drivers
For this simple long turbo only, surviving expiry cash per certificate =r ×max(S−financing level,0). If the specified barrier is touched at any monitored observation, cash becomes the stated residual instead, even if the reference later recovers. A lower financing level can create leverage but funding costs may increase it over time. Do not charge an embedded financing adjustment again as a separate cost unless the term sheet imposes an additional fee. The plain-option breakeven or delta model does not describe a killed path.
Worked case
Synthetic90-day long turbo: issuer fictional Atlas Securities; S100 at entry; financing level90; lower barrier95; ratio0.1 reference units per certificate; continuous observation during the expressly defined underlying-market session; touch at or below95 knocks out; residual0; European maturity payment if alive, TRY cash two business days later. Buy1000 at1.20,total fees20. PathA never touches95 and ends110: cash1000 ×0.1 ×20=2000, net780. PathB never touches95 and ends100: cash1000, net−220. PathC touches95 then recovers to120: cash0, net−1220. Same favorable final direction cannot revive a knocked-out security.
Adverse case
A session gap from100 to90 crosses the declared barrier and yields zero under these synthetic terms, not a guaranteed sale at95. If the financing level increases from90 to91 before a surviving final110, cash falls from2000 to1900, net680. Before expiry a surviving certificate with supplied sale bid0.80 realizes800−1200−20=−420; an untriggered barrier is not a promise to retain purchase value. Issuer default or trading interruption is separate from the barrier event and can impair cash even if the payoff survives.
Practical use
Obtain barrier observation source/hours, touch wording, residual calculation and financing-level adjustment. A turbo family description is not proof of a listed issue or executable exit.
For any actual domestic implementation, verify the exact issue/contract, authorized intermediary, account permission and executable size. Include spread, commissions, passed-through fees, funding/borrow, custody and exercise/exit costs without double-counting embedded charges. Recheck income year, residency/status, issue/acquisition dates and effective tax law; all case results remain before actual tax.
Decision boundaries
Use a turbo only after mapping the monitored path and the full loss budget. A product with no further margin obligation can still lose all paid cash quickly. Decline if observation hours, residual rules or financing adjustments are unclear. A plain long option may better fit a need for a right that survives a temporary adverse move. Compare the protection need, not only the advertised leverage. Do not present this fictional path-dependent issue as currently accessible through a local broker.
Practice and references
Exercise: long turbo ratio0.05, financing80, barrier85,touch knockout residual0; quantity2000,purchase1.50,fees40. Solution: A surviving final120 pays2000 ×0.05 ×40=4000, net960. A touch85 followed by final120 pays0 and loses3040. If alive with final100, cash2000 and loss1040. The barrier history is required data, not an optional stress detail.
Takeaway: A barrier event depends on the monitored path and can terminate value before a later recovery. Reference links: product card, formula; glossary: Turbo certificate; Barrier; Knockout. Next: C4T8L3. Topic test.
