Decision and objectives

Decision: Protection analysis begins with the exact entity and failure type; registration does not insure investment returns. Objectives: Distinguish registration from investment merit; Classify custody shortfall versus market loss; Read protection scope for the exact entity and account. Prerequisite: C6T1L1.

All numerical offers, rates, prices, account chains, fees and contract parameters below are hypothetical, unless a primary document is expressly identified. They are not current executable offers or evidence that a Turkey-resident investor can access them. The assumed investor is a Turkey-resident individual outside a business, with no assumed US citizenship or tax residence; actual classification must be checked. Results are before actual tax unless a fictional tax schedule is explicitly supplied. No account, deposit or trade is required.

Mechanics

A register answers whether a named entity has a recorded status and permissions; it does not certify that every advertised activity is covered or that the investment will gain value. Search the exact legal name and registration identifier, then compare contact details and account documents to avoid a clone or affiliate mismatch. Custody rules and compensation schemes concern defined failures and claims. They are not interchangeable with deposit insurance, issuer guarantees or a promise against market decline. The SIPC source is explicitly US-specific; other jurisdictions require their own scheme and account analysis.

Price and return drivers

Classify a loss before asking about compensation. A market decline changes the value of assets that still exist. A missing-security custody shortfall concerns assets that should be returned. An issuer default concerns a security’s credit performance. A cash-sweep bank deposit can sit under a different legal arrangement from broker cash or a money-market fund. A logo on a group website does not establish that the investor’s exact affiliate, account title, cash purpose and product are covered. Even an eligible claim has deadlines, processes and possible delays.

Worked case

Use a fictional custody statement with 100 shares originally bought USD 100 each and USD 2000 cash. Before a broker failure the shares mark 80: market value 8000 and market loss 2000. The reconciled record shows only 90 shares available: missing 10 shares at the 80 observation value correspond to 800 USD custody shortfall. Total expected account mark is 10000; available assets are 90×80+2000=9200. The 800 shortfall and 2000 market decline are different quantities. No scheme payout is calculated: eligibility, valuation rules and legal treatment are intentionally not supplied.

Adverse case

Three states at the same 8000 share-market value clarify the decision. With all 100 shares returned, no securities are missing even though market loss is 2000. With 90 returned, 10 are missing and the illustrative shortfall is 800. With 50 returned, 50 are missing and the illustrative shortfall is 4000. These values are not promised compensation. A recovery delay can leave a near-term spending obligation unmet even when every share is ultimately restored. An unsupported “insured account” statement cannot bridge that timing gap.

Practical use

Read the exact regulator entry, customer-asset terms, scheme membership and exclusions for the actual entity. The checked SIPC material distinguishes custody restoration from market-value loss; do not treat its scope as a Turkish or global guarantee. Keep dated register and account evidence with the decision record.

Before implementation verify the legal entity, jurisdiction, authorized access, actual instrument identifier and full documents. Include bid/ask, commissions, transfer/FX, custody, funding and exit costs; avoid deducting already embedded fund expenses twice. Recheck residency, income year, acquisition dates, withholding, treaty and domestic declaration treatment. Foreign tax concessions or investor protections do not follow automatically from the instrument name or trading currency.

Decision boundaries

Accept a protection claim only within verified entity, account, asset and failure conditions. Decline funding when a promoter relies on a parent company’s membership while the contract names another affiliate. Do not reject an otherwise documented account solely because it does not insure market performance; that is a different risk. Keep a cash reserve outside a potentially delayed recovery process when the investor has a hard spending date.

Practice and references

Exercise: 80 shares expected, USD 25 observation price, USD 1000 cash. Only 72 shares are available. Solution: expected total 80×25+1000=3000; available 72×25+1000=2800; missing 8 shares have illustrative value 200. No calculation establishes a statutory payout or compensates an earlier market loss without the actual rules.

Takeaway: Protection analysis begins with the exact entity and failure type; registration does not insure investment returns. References: product card, formula; glossary: Registration; Custody shortfall; Investor compensation. Next: C6T1L3. Topic test.
