Evaluate early withdrawal reinvestment risk and protection boundaries
C1T2L4 · Revised 2026-10-26
Decision and objectives
Practical task: Divide a reserve between uncertain withdrawals and a fixed maturity
Objectives: Calculate the cost of an early break; Stress reinvestment assumptions; Separate insurance scope from cash availability.
Required prior knowledge: C1T2L3. Classification: domestic. Revision: 2026-10-26. All fictional names, prices, rates, fees, calendars and tax schedules below are hypothetical unless explicitly identified as a dated document observation.
The highest quoted term rate can be an expensive way to hold money whose withdrawal date is uncertain. Early exit, renewal and legal protection answer different questions. Early-exit terms govern the contract if cash is needed sooner; reinvestment risk concerns the rate available after maturity; protection rules govern specified institutional failures. None is a substitute for the others.
Mechanics
A deposit may repay principal on a permitted early break while reducing or cancelling interest under its contract. A participation account has its own exit and result-allocation provisions. A fund redemption instead realizes the applicable unit price under its dealing terms. Write the cash reserve as separate dated buckets: immediate spending, near-term committed payments and a genuinely flexible surplus.
Insurance analysis requires the legal depositor, licensed bank, domestic/foreign branch location, account category, currency, aggregation rule, eligible interest/profit and current exclusions. Several branded channels can belong to one legal bank. Marketable funds are different legal products and cannot be placed inside a deposit-protection limit by analogy.
Price and return drivers
Compare “hold to maturity” cash with “withdraw on the needed date” cash. The opportunity cost of a term deposit is the accessible alternative's net return forgone, not merely the advertised interest cancelled. For reinvestment, multiply the cash available after the first maturity by the second period's growth factor; do not assume a future term will renew at today's rate. A fictional insurance cap can illustrate aggregation but is not evidence of today's legal limit.
Worked case
Hypothetical TRY 300,000 reserve: a 60-day term deposit accrues at 30.4167% simple annual rate, Actual/365, approximately TRY 15,000 interest at maturity. To avoid rounding ambiguity, the fictional term sheet supplies exactly TRY 15,000 gross maturity interest. An invented 10% tax and TRY 50 fee leave TRY 313,450.
The investor instead needs all cash on day 20. The supplied early-break clause pays principal only and the same TRY 50 fee: TRY 299,950. A fully accessible alternative would have earned a supplied TRY 4,000 gross over 20 days, with invented 10% tax and TRY 50 fee, producing TRY 303,550. Choosing the term cost TRY 3,600 of foregone net earnings at the actual withdrawal date. The advertised maturity gain was never available on day 20.
Adverse case
For an independent reinvestment stress, hypothetical TRY 100,000 earns 3% over the first 30 days and is reinvested for another 30. If the next return is 3%, cash is TRY 106,090; if it falls to 1%, cash is TRY 104,030. The TRY 2,060 difference is reinvestment uncertainty, before investor tax and charges.
For protection arithmetic only, assume a fictional scheme caps eligible aggregate claims at TRY 250,000 per person per legal bank. Two eligible accounts at the same bank contain TRY 180,000 and TRY 110,000 including eligible accrual. Combined claim is TRY 290,000 and amount above the fictional cap TRY 40,000. Opening a third account at the same bank does not change that aggregation.
Practical use
Check current TMSF scope and limits directly before relying on insurance; this draft states no current cap. Banking Law establishes the legal framework, but an old text cannot establish every later limit or exclusion. Even covered claims can involve a payout process, so emergency liquidity should not depend on immediate insurance reimbursement. Include early-break fees, tax, transfer time and renewal instructions in the reserve decision. Actual Turkish taxation requires the complete income-year, investor-status and acquisition/effective-date record; all amounts here use invented schedules.
Decision boundaries
Use a term product for money whose date is genuinely known and whose counterparty/protection profile is acceptable. Use accessible cash for uncertain needs; use a fund only if its redemption risk is acceptable. Decline automatic rollover when the next liability falls inside the renewed term or the future rate is not yet known. Protection can reduce a specific failure exposure while leaving inflation, foreign-currency conversion, opportunity cost and payment-delay risks.
Practice and references
Exercise: hypothetical TRY 90,000 earns 2.5% for 30 days, followed by 0.5% for another 30. Calculate the final cash and compare with renewing at 2.5%. Answer: 90,000 × 1.025 × 1.005 = TRY 92,711.25; unchanged-rate path = 90,000 × 1.025^2 = TRY 94,556.25; difference TRY 1,845 before charges and tax. Separately, under a fictional TRY 100,000 per-bank cap, accounts of TRY 70,000 and TRY 50,000 leave TRY 20,000 above the cap. Neither number states a current protection rule.
Takeaway: align maturity with need, stress renewal and verify protection as a separate legal claim.
